Establishment of Tatra National Park

1 January 1949

Tatra National Park, known in Slovakia as TANAP, protects the Slovak side of the High Tatras, the highest part of the Carpathian Mountains. It is a landscape of sharp granite peaks, glacial lakes, valleys and alpine meadows, and it includes Gerlach Peak, at 2,655 meters the highest summit in the Carpathians. The park shelters animals such as brown bears, wolves, lynx, chamois and marmots. A Polish national park protects the northern side of the range, and together they form a transboundary biosphere reserve. Tourism, including hiking, skiing and mountaineering, is highly developed, which creates problems for conservation. The forests were also heavily damaged by a windstorm in 2004.
