Establishment of Mount Kenya National Park

1949

Mount Kenya National Park protects the upper slopes of Mount Kenya, an extinct volcano and the second-highest mountain in Africa, which rises to more than five thousand meters on the equator. The mountain has several peaks, glaciers that have been shrinking quickly for decades, and distinctive zones of vegetation, from montane forest to bamboo, moorland with giant lobelias and groundsels, and bare rock and ice. It is sacred to the Kikuyu people, who believe that their god Ngai lives on its summit, and which they call Kirinyaga. The park lies in central Kenya and is a popular destination for climbers and hikers. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, and has been extended since.
