Construction of Wien-Schwechat Airport

1954

Vienna International Airport, usually called Wien-Schwechat after the town where it lies, southeast of the Austrian capital, began as a military airfield built in the 1930s. After the Second World War it came under Allied and then Austrian control, and in the 1950s it was developed as the city's civil airport, replacing the older airfield at Aspern. Its terminals have been expanded repeatedly, most notably with a major new building in the 2000s, and it has grown into the main hub of Austrian Airlines. Because of Vienna's position in Central Europe, it has long served as a gateway to Eastern Europe.
