Establishment of Mana Pools

1975

Mana Pools National Park lies in northern Zimbabwe, on the floodplain of the Zambezi River, and is known for its wildlife and for the chance to walk among large animals without a vehicle. The name Mana means four in the Shona language, and refers to four large pools left by the river as it shifted its course. Elephants, hippopotamuses, buffalo, lions and crocodiles gather there, especially in the dry season, and the stands of acacia and mahogany trees are famous for elephants that stand on their hind legs to reach pods. The park, together with the neighboring Sapi and Chewore safari areas, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Poaching and pressure from development have been persistent problems.
