Rise of Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia

from 1975 to 1988

The Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia, known as ASALA, was an Armenian militant organisation founded in Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War. It carried out bombings and assassinations, mainly targeting Turkish diplomats and institutions, to force Turkey to recognise the Armenian genocide of 1915 and to cede territory, and it also attacked targets in several European countries, causing many civilian deaths. Its use of violence was condemned by most Armenian organisations and communities and by governments. The group split in the early 1980s and lost support, and was largely inactive by the end of the decade. Its history remains a sensitive subject, and Turkey regards it as a terrorist organisation.
