Liiga is the top level of ice hockey in Finland, a country where the sport is among the most popular. The league was created in the mid-1970s to replace the earlier SM-sarja, which had run since 1928, and it was known for many years as the SM-liiga before taking its present name. It is contested by clubs such as Tappara, Ilves, HIFK and Kärpät, and the season ends with play-offs for the Kanada-malja trophy. Liiga is generally regarded as one of the strongest leagues in Europe, and it has produced many players who went on to the National Hockey League.
