On 30 October 1974, in Kinshasa in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), the 32-year-old Muhammad Ali, a former champion who had been stripped of his title for refusing the draft to Vietnam, fought the undefeated world heavyweight champion George Foreman at 4 in the morning to suit American television. Promoted by Don King and funded by Zaire's president Mobutu, it drew a global audience. Ali used a strategy he called the 'rope-a-dope', leaning on the ropes and letting Foreman punch himself out, then knocked him out in the eighth round. It is among the most celebrated fights in boxing history.
