Establishment of Kinabalu Park

1964

Kinabalu Park is a protected area in Sabah, on the island of Borneo in Malaysia, centred on Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Borneo and one of the highest in Southeast Asia. Because of the huge difference in altitude, the park contains habitats ranging from tropical lowland rainforest to montane forest and stunted alpine vegetation on the summit. It has an extraordinary variety of plants, with thousands of species, including many orchids, pitcher plants and rhododendrons. The giant Rafflesia flower can be found in its forests. The park is one of Malaysia's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it is a popular destination for climbers who ascend the mountain.
