Publication of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

1964

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a children's novel by the British writer Roald Dahl, illustrated in its first edition by Joseph Schindelman. It tells of Charlie Bucket, a poor boy who finds one of five golden tickets giving him a tour of the secret factory of the eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka. The other winners are spoiled and greedy children, such as Augustus Gloop and Veruca Salt, who come to a bad end through their own faults, while honest Charlie is rewarded. The book mixes fantasy, dark humour and moral lessons. It has been filmed twice, as Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in 1971 and as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005.
