Jeff Bezos was born on 12 January 1964 in Albuquerque. An American entrepreneur, Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 as an online bookstore in his garage in Seattle, after leaving a job on Wall Street. Under his leadership it expanded into an enormous retailer of nearly everything and a pioneer of cloud computing through Amazon Web Services, becoming one of the most valuable companies in the world. He stepped down as chief executive in 2021. Bezos also founded the spaceflight company Blue Origin, bought The Washington Post in 2013, and was for several years the richest person in the world. Critics have focused on working conditions at Amazon and its market power.
