Establishment of Kahuzi-Biéga National Park

1970

Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a protected area in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, near the city of Bukavu and Lake Kivu. It takes its name from two extinct volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega, which rise from a landscape of rainforest and mountain forest. The park is best known as a refuge of the eastern lowland gorilla, also called Grauer's gorilla, the largest of the gorilla subspecies. It also shelters elephants, chimpanzees and many bird species. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980, and it was later placed on the list of sites in danger because of armed conflict, poaching, mining and settlement in the area.
