The New York City Marathon is an annual long-distance running race through the five boroughs of New York City, and one of the largest marathons in the world. The first race, in 1970, was organised by the New York Road Runners and took place entirely inside Central Park, with a small field of runners. In 1976 the course was expanded to run through all five boroughs, starting at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Staten Island and finishing in Central Park, under the leadership of the race director Fred Lebow. It is held on the first Sunday of November and attracts tens of thousands of runners, along with spectators lining the streets. The race is one of the World Marathon Majors.
