Establishment of Garajonay National Park

25 March 1981

Garajonay National Park is a protected area on La Gomera, one of the Canary Islands in Spain, covering the central highlands of the island. Its main treasure is a laurel forest, or laurisilva, a type of subtropical cloud forest that once covered much of southern Europe millions of years ago and now survives only in a few places in the Atlantic islands. Mist from the trade winds keeps the forest moist and covered with moss and ferns, and the park is home to many plants and animals found nowhere else. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. A large fire burned part of the park in 2012, and the forest is recovering slowly.
