Establishment of Emas National Park

1961

Emas National Park is a protected area in the state of Goias, in central Brazil, which preserves one of the largest remaining areas of the cerrado, the tropical savanna that covers much of the country's interior. Its landscape of open grasslands and scattered trees is dotted with huge termite mounds, which at night glow because of bioluminescent larvae living in them. It is home to wildlife that has declined elsewhere, including the giant anteater, the maned wolf, the pampas deer and the greater rhea. The park and the nearby Chapada dos Veadeiros were inscribed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, recognising the importance of the cerrado, which is threatened by agriculture and fire.
