The Vostok programme was the first Soviet human spaceflight program, led by the chief designer Sergei Korolev. Its single-seat capsule was launched on a rocket derived from a military missile, and it carried the first human into space, Yuri Gagarin, on a flight that made one orbit of the Earth. Later missions extended the time in space: Gherman Titov spent about a day in orbit on Vostok 2, and in 1962 Vostok 3 and 4 flew at the same time. The programme ended with the flight of Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, on Vostok 6. Cosmonauts ejected from the capsule and landed by parachute. Vostok was succeeded by the multi-seat Voskhod and then Soyuz.
