Establishment of Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park

1961

Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park is a protected area on the plateau of the same name in the state of Goiás, in central Brazil, about two hundred kilometers north of Brasília. It protects an ancient landscape of the cerrado, the Brazilian savanna, with rocky outcrops of quartz, deep canyons, waterfalls and natural pools. The area is rich in plant species, many of them found nowhere else, and is home to animals such as the maned wolf, giant anteater and jaguar. The park was created in the early 1960s, during the presidency of Juscelino Kubitschek, who also built the new capital. It was later extended and, with other protected areas, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
