Establishment of Canaima National Park

12 June 1962

Canaima National Park is a vast protected area in south-eastern Venezuela, in the Gran Sabana region on the border with Brazil and Guyana. It is famous for its tepuis, flat-topped sandstone mountains with sheer cliffs, which rise from the savanna and are among the oldest geological formations on Earth. The park includes Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, which drops from the Auyan-tepui. The tepui summits are isolated habitats with many plants and animals found nowhere else. The Pemon people live in the park and have long regarded the tepuis as sacred. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 and is a major destination for adventure tourism.
