The American Revolution was the political and military upheaval in which thirteen British colonies in North America broke away from Britain and formed the United States. Its beginnings are often dated from the colonial protests against the Stamp Act in 1765 and the taxation of the colonies without their representation in Parliament, followed by the Boston Tea Party and the clashes at Lexington and Concord in 1775. The colonies declared independence on 4 July 1776, and with the help of France they won the war, notably at Saratoga and Yorktown. The Treaty of Paris of 1783 recognized American independence. The revolution produced the ideas of republican government and the rights of citizens, set out in the Constitution of 1787, and inspired later revolutions elsewhere.
