The Kingdom of Holland was a client state of Napoleonic France, created in place of the Batavian Republic by Napoleon in 1806 and given to his younger brother Louis Bonaparte. Louis, who chose Amsterdam as his capital, tried to rule in the interests of the Dutch, which brought him into conflict with his brother. He did not enforce the Continental System, the blockade against British trade, strictly enough, since it was ruinous for Dutch commerce. In July 1810 Louis abdicated, and Napoleon annexed the Netherlands to the French Empire. Dutch independence was restored in 1813 after Napoleon's defeat.
