Duchy of Milan

from 11 May 1395 to 17 October 1797

The Duchy of Milan was a state in northern Italy centred on the wealthy city of Milan. It was created when Gian Galeazzo Visconti obtained the title of duke from the German king Wenceslaus. The Visconti dynasty was succeeded in 1450 by the condottiero Francesco Sforza, whose family made Milan a leading centre of Renaissance art and science; Ludovico Sforza employed Leonardo da Vinci. The duchy became a prize in the Italian Wars between France and the Habsburgs, and after 1535 it passed to the Spanish crown and later to Austria. The French Revolution ended its independence when Napoleon's armies conquered it, and the old state was dissolved after Napoleon's early campaigns in Italy.
