Joseon

from 5 August 1392 to 12 October 1897

Joseon was the last and longest-lasting dynasty of Korea, founded by the general Yi Seong-gye, who overthrew the Goryeo kingdom and established a new capital at Hanyang, today's Seoul. The state adopted Neo-Confucianism as its guiding ideology, which shaped its government, social hierarchy and family life. King Sejong the Great sponsored science and the creation of the Korean alphabet, Hangul. Joseon survived devastating Japanese invasions in the 1590s and Manchu invasions in the 1600s, and it followed a policy of isolation until Japan forced it to open its ports in 1876. In 1897 the kingdom was renamed the Korean Empire, and Japan annexed the country in 1910.
