Kalmar Union

from 1397 to 1523

The Kalmar Union was a union of the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden under a single monarch, set up at Kalmar in Sweden under the leadership of Queen Margaret I of Denmark, who ruled through her grand-nephew Eric of Pomerania. The aim was to create a strong Scandinavian block against the growing power of the German Hanseatic League. The union was uneasy from the start, since the Swedish nobility resented Danish dominance and high taxes. Sweden repeatedly rebelled, and the union ended after the Stockholm Bloodbath of 1520, when the Danish king Christian II executed Swedish nobles, and Gustav Vasa led a revolt that made him king in 1523. Denmark and Norway stayed united for almost three more centuries.
