Construction of Taipei 101

14 November 2005

Taipei 101 is a skyscraper in the Xinyi District of Taipei, Taiwan, designed by the architect C. Y. Lee and completed in the mid-2000s. It rises to about 508 meters and was the tallest building in the world from 2004 until the Burj Khalifa in Dubai surpassed it in 2010. Its design recalls a stack of pagoda-like segments, with each of the eight tiers meant to evoke a stalk of bamboo or the traditional pagoda. A large steel pendulum, called a tuned mass damper, hangs inside the upper floors to reduce swaying caused by wind and earthquakes. The building houses offices, shopping and an observation deck, and is known for its New Year's Eve fireworks.
