Discovery of TRAPPIST-1 c

2 May 2016

TRAPPIST-1 c is the second planet from its star, an ultracool red dwarf about forty light-years away in the constellation Aquarius. It was announced in 2016, together with TRAPPIST-1 b, by astronomers led by Michaël Gillon who used the TRAPPIST telescope in Chile, and as more planets were found in 2017 the system became known for having seven Earth-sized worlds. TRAPPIST-1 c is a rocky planet about the size of Venus and Earth, which orbits its star in a little over two days, and it is probably too hot to have liquid water. Observations with the James Webb Space Telescope in 2023 suggested that it does not have a thick carbon dioxide atmosphere.
