Artemis program

2017

The Artemis programme is a human spaceflight programme of the United States, led by NASA, whose goal is to return astronauts to the Moon and establish a sustainable presence there as a step towards Mars. It grew out of a policy directive in 2017 and was named after Artemis, the twin sister of Apollo and goddess of the Moon in Greek mythology. NASA has said it plans to land the first woman and the first person of colour on the lunar surface. The programme uses the Space Launch System rocket and the Orion crew capsule, with commercial landers to be provided by private companies. Artemis I, an uncrewed test flight around the Moon, took place in 2022. The Artemis Accords set out principles for international cooperation.
