Discovery of S/2003 J 12

8 February 2003

S/2003 J 12 is a very small moon of Jupiter that was discovered in early 2003 in a survey by astronomers at the University of Hawaii who found many faint outer satellites of the planet. It belongs to the group of irregular moons that orbit far from Jupiter, probably captured from the asteroid belt or beyond, and it has only a provisional designation and no formal name. Its diameter is of the order of one kilometer, which makes it one of the smallest known moons of Jupiter.
