Discovery of Kore

8 February 2003

Kore is a small irregular moon of Jupiter, only about two kilometres across, belonging to the Pasiphae group of retrograde moons. It orbits the planet at a great distance, in the opposite direction to Jupiter's rotation, and is believed to be a fragment of a larger captured body. It was discovered in a survey of the planet's outer moons by astronomers at the University of Hawaii. Its name is another name for Persephone, the goddess of the underworld and daughter of Zeus and Demeter, from the Greek word for maiden.
