Discovery of Erriapus

23 September 2000

Erriapus is an irregular moon of Saturn, about ten kilometers across, found in 2000 by a team led by Brett Gladman. It orbits Saturn at a great distance, in the same direction as the planet turns, and belongs to the Gallic group of moons, along with Albiorix and Tarvos, which have similar orbits. The moons of the Gallic group take their names from Gallic mythology, and Erriapus is named after a Gallic giant. As with other irregular moons, it is thought to have been captured by Saturn long ago.
