Rita Hayworth was born on 17 October 1918 in New York City. An American actress and dancer, Hayworth became one of the most famous screen stars of the 1940s. Born Margarita Cansino into a family of dancers, she began performing as a teenager, and her career took off after she changed her name and hair color. She starred in Gilda, a film noir in which she performed the song Put the Blame on Mame, and in Cover Girl, Down to Earth and The Lady from Shanghai, directed by her then husband Orson Welles. She was known as the Love Goddess and was a favorite pin-up of soldiers in World War II. In later years she suffered from Alzheimer's disease.
