First flight of Atlantis

3 October 1985

Atlantis was one of the orbiters of NASA's Space Shuttle fleet and the fourth to be built, named after a research ship of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Its first mission, in autumn 1985, was a classified military flight for the United States Department of Defense. Atlantis later launched the Magellan probe to Venus and the Galileo probe to Jupiter, and took part in missions to the Russian space station Mir and to the International Space Station. It also flew the final shuttle mission in July 2011, after which the fleet was retired. Atlantis is now on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida.
