Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

13 December 2006

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is a United Nations human rights treaty, adopted by the General Assembly, which sets out the rights of people with disabilities and the obligations of states to promote and protect them. It marked a shift from treating disabled people as objects of charity and medical care to recognising them as rights holders, in line with what is called the social model of disability. It covers areas including accessibility, education, work, health and equal recognition before the law. It came into force in 2008, and has been ratified by the great majority of states. A committee of independent experts monitors its application.
