Founding of Burger King

1954

Burger King traces its roots to Insta-Burger King, a restaurant started in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1953, which used a special oven for cooking hamburgers. When that business ran into financial trouble, two of its franchisees in Miami, James McLamore and David Edgerton, took it over in 1954 and renamed it Burger King. They introduced the flame-grilled Whopper in 1957, which became the chain's signature product. Pillsbury bought the business in 1967, and ownership changed several times afterward. Since 2014 it has been part of Restaurant Brands International, and it is one of the largest hamburger chains in the world.
