Construction of Vasco da Gama Bridge

29 March 1998

The Vasco da Gama Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge across the Tagus River estuary near Lisbon, one of the longest bridges in Europe. It was built to relieve traffic on the older 25 de Abril Bridge and opened shortly before the Expo 98 world fair in Lisbon, which was held to mark five hundred years since Vasco da Gama reached India by sea. The bridge is a series of viaducts, in the middle of which a cable-stayed section rises high enough to let ships pass. It was designed to withstand strong earthquakes and high winds. The bridge carries a motorway and is a major link between the north and south of Portugal.
