Construction of Akashi Kaikyō Bridge

5 April 1998

The Akashi Kaiko Bridge crosses the Akashi Strait to link the city of Kobe on Honshu with Awaji Island, and is part of a route to Shikoku. It is a suspension bridge with a central span of 1,991 metres, which was the longest of any suspension bridge in the world until a bridge in Turkey surpassed it in 2022. The strait is exposed to typhoons, strong currents and earthquakes, and the bridge was designed to withstand them. During construction the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995 shifted the towers apart, lengthening the span by about a metre, and the engineers adapted the design accordingly.
