Founding of Pan-STARRS

2006

Pan-STARRS, short for the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, is an astronomical survey based at the Haleakala Observatory on Maui in Hawaii and run by the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy. It uses wide-field telescopes with very large digital cameras to scan the whole visible sky repeatedly, looking for objects that move or change in brightness. Its main goals include detecting asteroids and comets that could threaten Earth, and it has found large numbers of near-Earth objects. In 2017 it discovered the first known interstellar object passing through the Solar System, which was named 'Oumuamua. Its huge catalogue of images and stars is used for research in many areas of astronomy.
