Construction of Shanghai Pudong International Airport

1999

Shanghai Pudong International Airport is the main international airport of Shanghai, built on the coast of the Pudong area east of the city. The first phase opened in 1999 to relieve the older Hongqiao airport, which had become too crowded, and further runways and terminals were added in later years. The airport has been a major hub for China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines and handles the majority of the city's international flights and cargo. Since 2004 it has been connected to the city by the Shanghai Maglev Train, which carries passengers into Pudong at very high speed. It is one of the busiest airports in Asia.
