Construction of Jin Mao Tower

1999

The Jin Mao Tower is a skyscraper in the Pudong district of Shanghai, completed in the late 1990s. It was designed by the American firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and combines modern engineering with traditional Chinese influences, as its tiered form recalls a pagoda and its proportions are based on the number eight, considered lucky in Chinese culture. The tower has eighty-eight floors, with offices and a hotel, as well as an observation deck. When completed it was the tallest building in China and among the tallest in the world. It was later overshadowed by neighbouring skyscrapers, the Shanghai World Financial Center and the Shanghai Tower, but it remains a landmark of the city's skyline.
