Establishment of Gombe National Park

1968

Gombe Stream National Park is a small park on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, known worldwide as the site of the longest-running study of wild chimpanzees. The primatologist Jane Goodall began her work there with the Kasakela chimpanzees at the beginning of the 1960s, and she made discoveries that changed ideas about our closest relatives, including that chimpanzees make and use tools and hunt animals. The park, one of Tanzania's smallest, consists of steep forested valleys running down to the lake, and also protects other primates, such as red colobus and baboons. It is reached only by boat, and the research centre there continues to monitor the chimpanzee community across generations.
