Construction of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

1983

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a museum and institution in Cleveland, Ohio, dedicated to the history of rock music and the artists, producers and others who shaped it. The foundation behind it was created by Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records, and other music-industry figures, who held the first induction ceremony in New York. Cleveland was chosen as its home over rival cities after a campaign by local people, partly because of its link with the disc jockey Alan Freed. The glass-and-steel building on Lake Erie was designed by I. M. Pei, and opened in the mid-1990s. The museum displays instruments, costumes and manuscripts, and honours new inductees every year.
