Construction of Heidelberg University

1386

Heidelberg University was founded in 1386 and is the oldest university in what is now Germany. It was established by Elector Rupert I of the Palatinate with the authorization of Pope Urban VI, at a time when the Western Schism made it hard for German students to attend the University of Paris. It began with faculties of arts, theology, law and medicine. The university became an important center of the Reformation and later of Romanticism, and in the 19th century it was a leading institution for natural science, with scholars such as Robert Bunsen and Hermann von Helmholtz. Its famous alumni and professors include the sociologist Max Weber, and the philosopher Hegel taught there.
