Origins of Andorra la Vella

9th century

Andorra la Vella is the capital of Andorra, a small principality in the Pyrenees between France and Spain. At an altitude of about a thousand metres, it is the highest capital city in Europe. The settlement is mentioned in documents from the ninth century, and according to tradition, the Carolingian rulers granted the valley to local people in return for their help against the Moors. The city developed as the centre of the valleys and in the sixteenth century the Casa de la Vall was built as the seat of the General Council. Andorra is a co-principality, with the French head of state and the Bishop of Urgell as co-princes. Today, the city's economy relies on tourism and duty-free shopping.
