Construction of National Diet Library

5 June 1948

The National Diet Library is the national library of Japan and serves the country's parliament, the Diet. It was established by law in 1948, after the Second World War, on the model of the American Library of Congress, and was intended to support democratic government by giving legislators the information they needed. Its main building in the Nagatachō district of Tokyo was completed in 1961, with a later new building added in 1986. By law it receives a copy of every publication issued in Japan, which makes it the country's main repository of printed works. It also runs a large digital archive and provides research services to members of the Diet.
