The Malayan Emergency was a guerrilla war fought by British and Commonwealth forces and the Malayan government against the armed wing of the Malayan Communist Party, led by Chin Peng, which wanted to end British rule and set up a communist state. It was declared after the killing of European planters in Perak in June 1948. The insurgents were mostly ethnic Chinese and relied on rural supporters, and the government resettled hundreds of thousands of villagers in guarded new villages, cut off their supplies and offered amnesties. The strategy, described as winning hearts and minds, was refined under General Gerald Templer. Malaya became independent in 1957 and the Emergency was declared over in 1960.
