The 1948 Arab-Israeli War was the second stage of the broader Palestine war of 1947 to 1949, and began when the British Mandate ended, Israel declared independence, and the armies of Egypt, Transjordan, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon entered the former mandate territory. Israel defeated the invading forces after several rounds of fighting separated by truces, and expanded beyond the areas assigned to it in the United Nations partition plan. Armistice agreements in 1949 left Transjordan in control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and Egypt in control of Gaza. Some 700,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled, an event known to Palestinians as the Nakba.
