The Ilyushin Il-28 was a Soviet twin-engine jet bomber, one of the first mass-produced jet bombers in the world. Designed under Sergei Ilyushin, it entered service in the early 1950s and was exported widely, used by the air forces of many Warsaw Pact and non-aligned countries, and was built in China as the Harbin H-5. NATO gave it the reporting name Beagle. It was used in a number of conflicts, and in 1962, the presence of Il-28 bombers in Cuba was part of the Cuban Missile Crisis, with the Soviet Union agreeing to withdraw them. The aircraft's design was simple and reliable, and some stayed in service for decades.
