Construction of London Stansted Airport

1942

London Stansted Airport is in Essex, roughly fifty kilometres northeast of central London. It was built during the Second World War as a military airfield for the United States Army Air Forces, which used it as a base for bombers attacking targets in occupied Europe. After the war it was used for a time by the Royal Air Force and for charter and cargo flights before developing into a commercial airport. A new terminal designed by the architect Norman Foster opened in 1991, with a distinctive roof supported by tree-like columns. Stansted later became the main base of the low-cost airline Ryanair and one of the busiest airports serving London.
