Wannsee Conference

20 January 1942

The Wannsee Conference was a meeting of senior Nazi officials and civil servants held in a villa on the shore of the Wannsee lake in Berlin, chaired by Reinhard Heydrich, the head of the Reich Security Main Office. Its purpose was to coordinate the administrative cooperation of ministries and agencies in what the Nazis called the Final Solution of the Jewish question, the deportation and murder of the Jews of Europe. Adolf Eichmann prepared the meeting and drafted the minutes, the Wannsee Protocol, in euphemistic language. Mass killings of Jews had already begun in the occupied Soviet Union, so the conference did not decide the genocide but organised its extension across Europe. The villa is now a memorial and education centre.
