Denes nad Makedonija, meaning Today over Macedonia, is the national anthem of North Macedonia. The words were written by the poet Vlado Maleski and the music was composed by Todor Skalovski, and the song dates from the period of the Second World War, when Macedonian partisans were fighting for the creation of a Macedonian state within Yugoslavia. It served as the anthem of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia, a constituent republic of Yugoslavia. After the country declared independence in 1991 it was kept as the national anthem. The lyrics celebrate the struggle for freedom and the new day dawning over the country, and the song continued in use when the state was renamed North Macedonia in 2019.
