The Hiroshima Peace Memorial, also known as the Atomic Bomb Dome, is the ruin of a building in Hiroshima that was one of the few structures to remain standing close to the hypocenter of the atomic bomb dropped on the city on 6 August 1945. It was designed by the Czech architect Jan Letzel and completed in 1915 as the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall, and later used as the Industrial Promotion Hall. The bomb exploded almost directly above it, killing everyone inside, but its steel dome frame and part of the walls survived. After the war it was preserved as a reminder of the devastation and as a symbol of the hope for peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
