Saul Bellow was born on 10 June 1915 in Lachine. A Canadian-born American novelist, Bellow grew up in Chicago in a family of Russian-Jewish immigrants, and set many of his novels in that city. Works such as The Adventures of Augie March, Herzog, Seize the Day and Humboldt's Gift combine intellectual energy, comedy and a probing view of urban modern life. He won the National Book Award three times and the Pulitzer Prize for Humboldt's Gift. In 1976 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, cited for the human understanding and subtle analysis of contemporary culture in his work. He taught for decades at the University of Chicago.
